On December 31, 2022, our lives change forever in the Town of Brusly.
I was at the park with two of my four children. While playing at the park we heard emergency sirens, which was not that unusual. I received a phone call from my ex-wife stating that she believed our 15-year-old daughter Caroline had been in a car accident right around the corner. I gathered my two youngest children, Annalie and Jesse, and we rushed to the scene. When we arrived, my heart sank. It was visibly a very horrific scene. I struggled to collect my thoughts and tried to figure out what had happened.
Long story short, there was a high-speed pursuit that had torn through our town at approx. 11:30a.m. on New Years Eve. Caroline along with her best friend Maggie and Maggie’s brother Liam were running errands. They were getting prepared for a gathering with friends to ring in the New Year. They were doing everything right as far as driving and operating the vehicle properly on the road. While crossing LA 1 roadway and heading east, their vehicle was hit broadside at approx. 86 miles per hour by a Law Enforcement Officer. The officer did not slow down or attempt to brake while driving through the intersection with a red light. My daughter Caroline was in the passenger seat which took the blunt of the force. Unfortunately, Caroline and Maggie passed at the scene and Liam who was in the back seat was in critical condition fighting for his life. As we are trying to wrap our heads around this horrific scene it starts to set in, and our world turns 180 degrees.
The months after losing Caroline are filled with anger, depression, anxiety, guilt all while trying to hold everything together for my children. I wanted to make a change and educate others on high-speed pursuits. I then had a conversation with law enforcement officials and legislators and formed the Caroline Grace Gill Foundation.
